In recent years, Northern Irish theatre makers have noticeably moved away from the conventions of social realism and included several magical elements in their plays. So, for instance, where Jimmy McAleavey’s play The Sign of the Whale (2010) imagines a great whale coming to visit a troubled Belfast in 1977, Stacey Gregg’s Shibboleth (2015) features a talking and singing peacewall. Dr Stefanie Lehner explores the use of these fantastical features in recent Northern Irish drama to explore a range of social and political issues that mark the post-Troubles landscape.
