Scott’s Jazz Club was recently described as “The finest Jazz Club in Britain outside of Ronnie Scott’s” and “As good as any jazz club in New York”.
Markus Strothmann’s Irish roots inspired him to create his newest project ‘Emerald’. Having grown up half-Irish in Germany, Markus used to visit his mother’s side of the family in Dublin and Westport, Co. Mayo every year. Back in Germany, and especially during his studies of jazz music in the Netherlands, thinking of Ireland always put Markus in his comfort zone and he used to relax from the stress of daily life by listening to Irish music and having a good pint of Guinness or a glass of whiskey.
‘Emerald’ is Markus’s musical love letter to Ireland. In some of his compositions you can hear strong influences of Irish music itself; others may simply tell personal stories Markus connects with Ireland or resemble musical artworks of Ireland’s mesmerising landscape.
‘Emerald’ was released in 2020 and features Julian Elsesser on guitar, Jonathan Ihlenfeld Cuñado on bass, Fiete Felsch on saxophone/flute, Gary Husband on piano and the incredible Belfast-born singer Suzanne Savage, singing original lyrics in Irish, written by Markus’s aunt.
